Marty's Pipe Dreams were originally published in his Pipe Dreams poetry book (1994). A limited re-release was authorized by Marty in late 2000; I transcribed and designed the new version—which included Peter Lee's intro and the Alchemist's Song poem—and about 15 copies were sold and distributed. The Pipe Dreams are also now available in print in Marty's collected poetry, In the Seasons of My Eye (Panther Press), and in Peter Lee's new book, Opium Culture.

Pipe Dreams by Marty Matz:

What they say:

"Martin Matz is in my feeling one of the most positive and eloquent poets it is my privilege to be in touch with. How fine and beautiful are the opium-drenched lines in his Pipe Dreams, exquisitely presented in manner: delicate, mysterious and wondrous. He succeeds in developing an awareness of the strength and awesome beauty, the hidden power and intricate structure in the heart of a stone; the intangible mystique beheld in the flight of a hummingbird, the wing of a dragonfly or exotic butterfly kissing and drawing the sweet nectar from each flower."

      — Herbert Huncke

". . . the Beat Generation's big gun. It goes off all over the world. The language is elegant. The poet is sure of himself. The world is sure of the poet."

      — Bob Kaufman

"Martin Matz makes poetry like a true Toltec! He shapes a lyric waterfall for the rock of our ears!"

      — Jack Mueller

"Martin Matz's poetry is a song of transformations, a celebration of life's ceaseless progress from wonder to loss of fresh wonder: stunningly precise memories of the self's pilgrimage across ghastly and glorious landscapes of consciousness."

      — Gerald Nicosia

"The poems of Martin Matz are sincere fulgurations. They blend color and hard objects which bounce upon the rough edges. They follow a line of emotional thought. They speak of the teeth of mountains."

      — Howard Hart
